Two years ago at the Super Bowl the Patriots beat the Falcons 28-24. Everyone was celebrating and families were rushing the field to congratulate their loved ones. One of those people rushing the field was Michael Bennet, whose brother, Martellus Bennett, was playing for the Patriots.  As Bennett was trying to get on the field, security detail told him to use a different door. Bennett replied by saying “Y’all must know who I am, and I can own this [expletive]. I’m going on the field whether you like it or not,” according to the Houston Chronicle. The chief of police, Art Acevedo, said Bennett “forcibly opened locked doors”, ignored orders of the security team which included a 66 year old paraplegic woman in a wheelchair. The elderly woman suffered a sprained shoulder from the incident. A police officer witnessed the incident, but rushed to see if the woman was okay instead of detaining Bennett. Chief Acevedo said  “We knew who the suspect was. We knew what he had done and we knew where to find him.” He also commented “It’s offensive to me that a man who’s supposed to be an example, a professional athlete, thinks its OK to act like this.”

Bennett, who played for the Seahawks and just signed for the Eagles, was indicted Friday on a charge of injury to the elderly. He turned himself in Monday morning, and his bail was set at $10,000. Bennett was released when he posted bail at 5 p.m. The maximum penalty is up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Chief Acevedo was asked why it took over a year to indict Bennett and he replied that the “police had to prioritize more serious crimes. Also, Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in August.” The Eagles executive Howie Roseman stated that they are “aware of the situation involving Michael Bennett and are in the process of gathering more information,” and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Bennett denies that he ever touched the woman, and there are no videos of the altercation.
