Nearly a decade ago, eight years to be exact, developers at Riot Games were creating what would later be declared as the most popular game in the world; League of Legends. League of Legends is an online player vs player based game that tests the player’s capability and reactiveness on the Rift. The Rift is the map that every 5v5 is played on, except Howling Abyss, that consists of three lanes: mid, bottom, and top, and a jungle that lies in between each one. The objective of the game is to win your lane and infiltrate the enemy’s base to destroy their Nexus. Seems easy right? Complete opposite.

Not only is the game challenging in the aspects of playing against other players that might have more skill than you, your team can also become a problem. Although League of Legends is the most popular game in the world, it is also notoriously known for having a very “toxic” community. Players can become very insulting to one another and I have personal experience in this. Even if I find it funny, it is not funny to others. The League of Legends chat is home to homosexual, racist, and other derogatory slangs. The developers at Riot Games have addressed this issue, stating that any player found guilty of participating in any act of toxicity towards another player will receive a timed ban and if found truly detrimental, the account could be permanently banned and the player will have no ability to regain access.

Otherwise, if you can ignore the negative comments, League of Legends is actually rather enjoyable. The game tests your reaction skills, critical thinking, and deductive reasoning for making game changing decisions. The game revolves around the players working together because as time goes on in each match, team compatibility is arguably the most important thing you must do to finish out the game with a victory. This may mean you have to buy an item for another teammate instead of yourself. Unselfish players are the best teammates to have because having a selfish player can cause arguments and ultimately lose you the game.

The game has become so popular and has attracted so many that it has become a world-wide competition. Every year in September, the Worlds Tournament begins. The tournament consists of 24 teams, 3 from each region (South Korea, China, North America, Europe, Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau Brazil, Latin America North, Latin America South, Japan, Oceania, Turkey, Southeast Asia and CIS/Russia). Whichever team wins not only gets bragging rights, they also get the highest amount of money from the prize pool of $2,130,000, including fan contributions. This year the championship game will be held in China and is expected to sell out large venues. The tournament is also the most streamed live video on Twitch, a streaming a site, in the world.

If you’re bored and have nothing else to do, or enjoy competition, the World Tournament is definitely something worth watching. If you plan to, the next match is at 10:00 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, September 27th, and will showcase Cloud 9 and Lyon Gaming.
