Throughout the history of organized professional sports, there have been good teams and there have been not so good teams. Then, there are those teams that are so good, they can be identified as an athletic dynasty. According to the Bleacher Report, “legitimate dynasties are those who besides having won three or more titles also are teams pegged with personality, superstar talent and consistent winning seasons.” In this list, we will be counting down the top 5 sports dynasties of the past century.

  1. Los Angeles Lakers 2000-2010

Under head coach Phil Jackson, and lead by basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal and upcomer Kobe Bryant, the 2000 LA Lakers began what became a ten year dynasty. Over the eleven year period, the Lakers made 7 NBA Finals appearances, winning 5 of those 7.

  1. New England Patriots 2001-2010

The New England Patriots made their mark during the 2001 season. After the Patriots’ star quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, suffered an injury, late draft pick Tom Brady was named the new starter. Under the direction of head coach Bill Belichick, and a plethora of athletes such as Rob Gronkowski (tight end) and Randy Moss (wide receiver), the Patriots made 7 Super Bowl appearances between the years of 2001-2010. During this time they won 5 of those 7 Super Bowls.

  1. San Francisco 49ers 1981-1989

During the 1980’s, the name ‘Joe Montana’ was a household name. The leadership and strong arm of superstar Joe Montana, paired with the innovative coaching style of Bill Walsh, dominated the NFC as well as the rest of the NFL. Throughout the course of the 1981-1989 seasons, the 49ers made 5 Super Bowls and walked away with all 5 victories. To make things more impressive for the dominant West coast team, the 49ers destroyed the Denver Broncos 55-10 in the 1989 Super Bowl.

  1. New York Yankees 1936-1962

The New York Yankees, regardless of the time period, are no strangers to winning. The franchise itself has even had its fair share of mini-dynasties. However, none compare to the dynasty established between the years of 1936 and 1962. Under head coaches Joe McCarthy and Casey Stengel, paired with legends like Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra, the Yankees made 20 World Series’, winning an astounding 16 of those 20.

  1. Chicago Bulls 1991-1998

There’s no question to why the Chicago Bulls of the 90’s made this list. When you pair one of the best coaches of all time, Phil Jackson, and arguably the best player to ever step foot on the court, Michael Jordan, you get consistent winning seasons and championships. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and the rest of the Bulls made the NBA Finals 6 times, coming out on top all 6 of those times. The level of competition that the 1991-1998 Bulls brought to the NBA earns them the spot for the number one sports dynasty.
